In 1989, Pepsi unveiled this advertisement, but only showed it once in the United States because Madonna's MTV video version was too controversial. Watching this led to some interesting discussion about the sacred and the secular in marketing decisions.

I thought this video was fun to watch...but that's just me.
ReplyDeleteI love Madonna and used to listen to her when I was little. I had never seen the "Like A Prayer" video until we watched it in class but I have heard of the controversy before. I think it was a little much for her to be burning crosses in her video and that she should have been dropped from her Pepsi Ad campaign. I never knew she briefly had this campaign until it was also mentioned in class, since it's debut was in the year I was born. On the other hand though, she is Madonna and she can pretty much do whatever she wants, I think the controversy got her more press and attention anyways then the Pepsi commercial would have.
ReplyDeleteI do not think Modonna should have been allowed to burn crosses on her video. She should have gotten into some trouble for breaking her contract with Pepsi. I wonder why they didn't sue her. Probably, because they didn't want to be associated with her any more. I am confuesed about the guy locked up behind bars in the church. Was that suppose to be jesus? I am also confuesed about why he was black? To me that just reminded me of slavery and yet this video came out in the 1989. To me this whole video dates itself back to times that really still should not be represented. The time of slavery and the KKK why does she want to emphasize this? I have had these questions for a while and just wanted to ask them.
